I’ve long wondered why employers of illegal immigrants aren’t prosecuted, too. As you say, a lot less illegals would come, maybe close to zero, if there were no jobs available.

One potential problem, though, as someone tried telling me today, is that many customers might be too accustomed to the lower costs that illegals bring to services like restaurants and construction, and would get upset if prices rose.

My response is that we need to pay workers more, regardless. It’s sad that that the “lower costs” argument is based on breaking the law. It’s an unlawful illusion that needs to be readjusted, with wages brought in line to the reality of obeying the law.

Customers must readjust and get used to it. I have a feeling that many employers could pay more anyway.
