Thoughtful proponents of restrictive immigration policies and/or strong immigration enforcement (which I would count Mr. Lind and Mr. Cass among) need to come to terms that the greatest threat to their policies is not coming from their adversaries, but their friends including their friend in the White House.

These thoughtful advocates have long had to contend with a small, extremist subgroup of bigoted Nativists. Now, that subgroup is becoming at least the public face if not the dominant element. From accusing legal immigrants of "eating our pets; eating our cats and dogs" to reviving the old Nativist accusations against Catholics but now applying it to Muslims, and the stripping of visas from people perfectly legally present in this country, we have further evidence this is not about people "sneaking across the border."

Cleaning up one's own house is always an important but often ignored part of any movement. Of course, this is a challenge when much of the Nativism is coming from the man with the biggest megaphone (or 'Truth Social' account).
