I was happy to see Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Oren talk about how economic security and national security intertwine and need to work together. We need more rare earth mining-to-magnet industries here, more ingredients for pharmaceutical drugs, more of so many things. How can we have a safe country if we depend on other countries for these type of critical items?
It would even be dangerous to let a close ally make everything for us, let alone China. Just because some nations are allies one day doesn't mean they will always be allies. Things happen. It's better to depend on ourselves for most of everything, especially critical items.I kinda wish Bessent had listed the 5 to 8 critical industries that he said we need to re-shore, though he did mention a few.
I've also wondered how corporations can have their manufacturing factories in other countries and their offices in the US. I worked for a defense company that made armored personnel carriers (tanks) for the Army and Marines, and the offices and factories were connected. When I was promoted to the front office as a quality control analyst, there were a lot of issues we had to take care of in the factory.
So we'd go out to the factory and and look for corrective action. Just asking the workers what they think could solve the problem was a big help. How could we do this quickly and completely if our product was being made in China?
Anyway, glad to see Oren and Scott Bessent talking about these things.

It is most unfortunate, therefore, that Bessent does not understnd the additional economic security that accrues from tight integration with non-adveersaial economies and the damage that the Trump Administrtion's creation of trilion dolar deficits with the One Budget Bashing Bill does to national securigy.
What do you mean by non-adverserial? Surely you can't mean NATO which has been sponging off for a half century, including for three decades after the enemy imploded.
??? I can forsee a scenario in whihc say China would refuse to supply a valuable item (China invades Tauiwan, for example). Can you do the same for the EU? or Canada
