This essay is well written, but I think one blind spot it has is that it looks at things like “the state,” “business,” “community,” “citizenship,” “workforce training” sort of just as abstractions and really giving any attention to institutional design. Historically, workforce formation wasnt something corporations just decided to do; it emerged from dense local and regional ecologies of municipal governments, technical schools, apprenticeship systems, civic organizations, locally governed colleges, mass-member parties, and locally and regionally anchored firms.
Also, “business” is treated as a single actor when the structure of the private sector matters enormously, an ecosystem of locally and regionally embedded mid sized firms behaves very differently from one dominated by distant national corporations. So the essay sees outcomes (solidarity, citizenship, skilled labor, community) without seeing the organizational architectures that historically produced them or wondering if the public and private institutional designs and layouts
Eastern Europe got wise by learning from the horrid mistakes of others (i.e. Western Europe). The difference in results (with respect to maintaining a civil society) are obvious. Liberals will not miss Western civilization until it is gone. Hopefully, posterity will learn from their errors.
It's hard to take the WSJ/Switzerland critique seriously when no reference is made to the performative cruelty and blatant racism inherent in Don's mass deportation policy.

I'm no Joepa fan, like Don he was severely mentally diminished and unfit for the job (though he didn't incite an insurrection). And his immigration policy was clearly flawed. But a couple fun facts for you. Data has long shown that immigrants commit crimes at lower rates than native born Americans. And, Obama deported more people than Don, with a key difference that he focused on actual criminals. Don specializes in performative spectacles like sending a swat team with a video crew to "apprehend" the sandwich man, and snatching moms out of school pickup lines, coupled with deportations to foreign prisons for cash.
Don has made perfectly clear what he thinks of brown people, using words (all captured on video) I wouldn't let my son utter. He only likes immigrants who look like two of his three wives, Norwegians, and white Afrikaners.
One thing I'll give Don credit for though. He has flushed out those among us who struggle with the concepts embedded in our Declaration: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." Prior to Don, I had no clue how many Americans oppose this notion.
