One of the few advantages of being old and not caring anymore. My marriage broke up long ago for other reasons but it would have never survived the politics of this era.
I was dumped because I voted for Trump. I am a seventy-something widow who had a great relationship with a gentleman for over 5 years. On the first date I told him I leaned conservative, so he knew. I am so many things other than my voting record as I tried to communicate to him. Such a shame.
Ever heard the Jackson Browne song, “Whose side are you on?” You cannot tell me you love me when you tolerate subjugation, cruelty, and hierarchal power structures whose morals begin and end in the pocket$$$. 3 blind mice…
I don't care if you're a Democrat or Republican as long as you're not an ignorant Democrat or Republican.
Both parties are very corrupt and rarely represent the wishes of their constituents. The focus should be on policy outcomes not words and promises.
There are policy differences of course.
But the most visible party difference is in the outward acknowledgment of this corruption.
Democrats generally fall in line and support their party no matter what.
Whereas there is a large vocal swathe of Republicans and conservative leaning Independents who are very vocal when they see corruption in their party. The Republican Party is in major upheaval.
Who knows where all this will lead.
I actually love talking about it. But some people get really emotional and adversarial rather than just being fascinated by the intrigue.
While I agree 100% with everything you said, it misses the fundamental issue...feminazis have effectively pushed men away. Sorry, ladies, but you're just more trouble than you're worth.
My wife hates Trump. I voted for him four times. Don't forget the primary. We don't argue about it much. Mostly because I accept that she hates the guy and only discuss the issues. Doesn't hurt that I don't particularly like the man either.
I don't get most people's obsession with liking their politicians. I liked my old doctor better. She was married to a teacher as well, and we used to commiserate together over that issue. She got long covid, now I have a new doctor. I don't like him as much, but he is a better doctor then she was.
I liked Obama, but knew I would never vote for him from the first time I heard him on "Wait, wait don't tell me". He held some good ideas and attitudes but had no back bone. Oh well.
It kind of sucks for young people today. I don't think it has as much to do with politics as this article suggests. There are a lot of problems with online dating. It creates the illusion that you can order up the perfect partner. Life doesn't really work that way. People aren't widgets and you have to grow into each other.
I'm a progressive and very fortunately happily married. I'm politically very compatible with my wife so I don't have the challenge of a politically mixed marriage. But I truly believe we would get along just fine if we were politically at odds. We certainly disagree about other things and manage to get along well. We respect good will, fairness, benign intent, and logic. I wouldn't get along with someone who could not hew to logic or fact. That, of course, is a challenge for Trump supporters.
I'm vehemently opposed to Trump. He viscerally disgusts me on several levels. But I live in a Trump county. And I find the people here are (mostly) inter-personally generous, good-natured, helpful and kind. I don't get into politics with them for the most part. I can't reconcile who I see in front of me voting for someone I recoil from even listening to.
As a tradesman I was exposed to quite a lot of talk radio which was ubiquitous and noxiously right wing. Many of my fellow workers had a poor grasp of political/economic reality as a result and rotely recited the catchphrase of the day when it came to political discussion. Whenever the topic started getting into depth, (which was rare) their actual beliefs were often opposite of what they previously expressed and the people they nominally supported. But these guys weren't interested in politics, per se. They defaulted to a sort of tribal consensus of talk radio. While a high percentage of them were not readers and many had reading-specific challenges, they were smart and clever in dealing with the challenges of the trades. And they had other things to deal with in their lives. They were interested in their own family, kids, hobbies, sports, getting by. And we got along great, because I was also interested similarly and in my trade.
My point is that Media exposure is far more significant than is generally credited or accounted for in people's political stances. And those stances often don't reflect the better qualities of the people who hold them. That is a general statement applying to "left" and "right".
I wish we were a happier, better informed people. Whose kids enjoyed active non-virtual dating lives, kind cohorts, vivid and lively debate, and broad and deep social connection in the real world. It's a big project to change a culture.
20% of the Hinge profiles I see explicitly require me to be a leftist and/or communist. A distressing number of (straight) women I try to have conversations with IRL open up with "Men are all such trash, Amirite?" "Such-and-such media is So Queer" and "What are your pronouns?" Someone I made out with got mad at me the next day, saying "I'm so sick of straight guys assuming I'm not asexual".
I met my boyfriend in mid-2008 on a dating website and it paired us up despite being political opposites. I voted for Obama that year and he suffered in silence when I cheered on election night. He woke me up to a lot of things and I realized how uninformed I was in terms of politics. 18 years later, I’m further to the right than he is and we are quite happy together. It breaks my heart for my sons that this has become such a charged issue, especially in California.
This is an application of what I call the "theologicalization of politics" with my students.
"People with different political views can be compatible at the individual level."
Only if they share some underlying cultural or religious commitment. And as your politics becomes less about means ("how do we pursue the common good") and more about ends ("what is good?") it's much harder.
We've been politically segregating ourselves geographically for a long time (see Bill Bishop's The Big Sort from 20 years ago.) This is the same phenomenon at the individual, instead of family, level.
And it's healthy. If you're a conservative dude, you can marry a woman who believes in a large welfare system. That's an argument over means. But why would you want to have children with a woman who, when she gives birth, won't know whether it's a boy or a girl until it's old enough to self-identify?
More important that Ford Vs Dodge in pickups? Most people who aren't extreme can agree on 80% of things just because most people are thoughtful, kind, and responsible. Half the remaining issues no one in their right mind cares about, and that leaves 10% to disagree on, not much of a hurdle.
Most people aren't even very informed, and it's real hard to be angry at someone who is unfamiliar with the most basic facts of an issue.
Generally Asians in Asia aren't very interested in US politics. Just saying.
Interesting analogy. And it seems to correlate with the current realities in our country.
My best guess is that this is by design in the pursuit of political advantages without concern to the well-being of the country.
Both political parties are guilty of this. The constant demonization and dehumanizing of political opponents. It seems louder and meaner on the right but that impression may be bias on my part.
Trump is simply continuing the pushing of boundaries of what is considered acceptable discourse, which is a process that started a long time ago.
Sarah Pailin and Hillary "Deplorables" Clinton seem quaint by comparison.
It is very difficult for me to reconcile the Trump supporters in my personal circle, polite and conservative salt of the earth types, ignoring the boorish behavior of Trump. Behavior, by the way, that they would not tolerate from their children, neighbors or colleagues.
I personally cannot mentally compartmentalize to that extent.
Maybe we do need to go Islamic? The Islamic countries like UAE Saudi Kuwait Jordan Egypt Bahrain Quatar and the others who keep the crazy ISSIS types down (lol they ship them off to the West to cause problems lol) seem to run safe clean orderly countries. The west we are a mess. They say democracies die by slow suicide, that seems true too.
In fact, all the Mediterranean and most of Africa and the middle east is Islamic. Most were Chrisitan at one time long ago before the pre-Islamic era as described in the Hadith book.
So, maybe to get order and have population growth again??? Seems to work?
Or we could go Chinese communist way? Population growth seems dead there worse than the west?
Oh ok no children is good ok got it. But who will take care of me when i get old? hmmmm problem here too?
The darn universities just can't seem to solve real challenges? hmmm?
One of the few advantages of being old and not caring anymore. My marriage broke up long ago for other reasons but it would have never survived the politics of this era.
Not caring anymore…great strategy…

As an Independent voter this is my personal take.
I don't care if you're a Democrat or Republican as long as you're not an ignorant Democrat or Republican.

My wife came down with TDS after 30 years and 2 kids. We got divorced. Dealbreaker.
While I agree 100% with everything you said, it misses the fundamental issue...feminazis have effectively pushed men away. Sorry, ladies, but you're just more trouble than you're worth.
I am so relieved you finally got the point.
I did. Did you?
My wife hates Trump. I voted for him four times. Don't forget the primary. We don't argue about it much. Mostly because I accept that she hates the guy and only discuss the issues. Doesn't hurt that I don't particularly like the man either.

I was a moderate democrat until 2020. Now I want nothing to do with them.
